Smart speakers are always listening for their wake word. What happens to the recordings? This guide explains voice assistant privacy and how to protect yours.

How Voice Assistants Work

Smart speakers continuously listen for their wake word ("Alexa", "Hey Google", "Hey Siri"). When detected, they record the following command and send it to cloud servers for processing. The recording may be stored to improve accuracy.

The speakers do not record everything — only commands following the wake word. But the recordings they do make reveal a lot about your life.

What Happens to Your Recordings

Amazon Alexa

Recordings are stored on Amazon servers until you delete them. Amazon may use recordings to improve Alexa (with your permission). Human reviewers may listen to samples (opt out available).

Google Assistant

Recordings are stored on Google servers until you delete them. Google may use recordings to improve Assistant (with your permission). Human reviewers may listen to samples (opt out available).

Apple Siri

Recordings are processed on-device by default. Audio is not stored on Apple servers unless you opt in. Most private of the three.

How to Protect Your Privacy

Review and Delete Recordings

All three platforms let you review and delete your voice recordings:

  • Alexa: Alexa app → Settings → Alexa Privacy
  • Google: myactivity.google.com
  • Siri: Settings → Privacy → Analytics & Improvements

Set up auto-deletion to remove recordings after 3-18 months.

Opt Out of Human Review

All three platforms offer options to opt out of human review of your recordings. Enable this option.

Opt Out of Data Use for AI Training

Prevent your recordings from being used to train AI models.

Use Physical Mute Buttons

All smart speakers have physical mute buttons that disconnect the microphone. Use them when you want privacy.

Disable Camera When Not Needed

For smart displays with cameras, use the physical camera shutter or disable the camera in settings.

The Bottom Line

Voice assistants collect data, but you have control. Review and delete your recordings regularly, opt out of human review and AI training, and use physical mute buttons when you want privacy. If privacy is your top concern, Apple Siri with HomePod is the most private option.
